Ingrid Cherrytree: A Methodological Approach for Assessing Biocultural Landscapes in Slovakia

Slovakia is a country with a rich cultural heritage and diverse natural landscapes. In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of the importance of preserving these landscapes, not only for their ecological value but also for their cultural significance. In this context, the concept of biocultural landscape has gained prominence as a way to understand the interplay between human and nature.

The biocultural landscape is a complex entity that encompasses both natural and anthropogenic elements. It is characterized by the interaction between these two components over the course of historical development. This interaction gives rise to different types of landscapes, each with its unique characteristics. In Slovakia, seven basic types of landscape were identified, ranging from natural to semi-natural to anthropogenic.

To assess the perception and significance of individual landscape types, a questionnaire survey was conducted among locals and experts in the field. The results showed that the respondents had a strong emotional attachment to their local landscapes and recognized the importance of preserving them for future generations. This sentiment is reflected in the European Landscape Convention, which aims to promote landscape protection, management, and planning.

The classification of biocultural landscapes is a complex task that requires an interdisciplinary approach. It involves synthesizing data from various sources, including maps of potential vegetation, real ecosystems, current land use, abiotic conditions, and statistical data. This information is analyzed using multi-criteria analysis in GIS to identify the key characteristics of each landscape type.

Our research proposes a methodological approach for creating and evaluating representative biocultural types of landscapes. This approach is based on previous landscape classifications and takes into account the interaction between natural and cultural elements. The goal is to develop an effective strategy for landscape protection and sustainable use, which will ensure the regular maintenance of these valuable landscapes.

In conclusion, our research demonstrates the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to assessing biocultural landscapes in Slovakia. By combining social and ecological aspects, we can gain a better understanding of the complex relationships between human and nature. This knowledge is essential for developing effective strategies for landscape protection and sustainable use, which will ensure the preservation of these valuable landscapes for future generations.
